A lockback knife does just what it sounds like -- a mechanism on the back of the knife locks the blade into place when open. This is a very strong lock!
The slip joint knife is a classic design where a spring or tension is placed on the blade to keep it open, but it is not locked. Pressure on the blade will close it.
Liner locks use a piece of steel under spring tension inside the knife to lock a blade in place. The knife pictured here is a liner lock.
Finally, the auto uses a spring to pop a blade out quickly.
